Mini Trucks!!!
Starting in the sixties, the Japanese manufactured what they termed “Kei” or light vehicles. Manufacturers of these trucks include: Suzuki, Daihatsu, Honda, Subaru, Mazda and Mitsubishi. These were built as a less expensive, more efficient, shorter, narrower and lighter alternative to standard size vehicles. The Japanese have used these small trucks to perform a myriad of tasks. When considering a special purpose vehicles, these used mini trucks are the perfect choice. The 80’s models have 40 horsepower 550cc engines, and the 90’s models have 45 horsepower 660cc engines. They have a manual 4 or 5 speed transmission—occasionally a 6 speed transmission. Kei trucks have changed in size over the years, but for comparison purposes, units are typically about 2/3 the length and 3/4 the width of a Dodge Dakota. Kei vehicle regulations have upgraded repeatedly over the years, mainly to meet ever tightening emissions laws and crash safety requirements. This means that through the years of production, the Japanese have really perfected these little trucks. Japanese Vehicle Laws Assure Quality Used Vehicles.
Punitive costs for keeping older vehicles on the road in Japan include a registration fee, tax, parking fees, and insurance costs. The new vehicle registration fee lasts for three years and then must be renewed every two years coupled with mandatory maintenance checks, which are very costly inspections. These very costly inspections keep Japanese vehicles in good running condition, but the same inspection fees force early replacement of quality used mini trucks with low mileage. That assures affordable prices and high quality vehicles for overseas buyers. Due to U.S. Regulations, we are unable to import 2006 or newer Japanese mini trucks. We import EPA approved units from 1990 to 2005. These vehicles are imported for off-road use. However, some state will license these as ATV’s. Dump trucks, van bodies, and other types of cargo boxes are available.
